Autonomous vehicles won't only kill jobs. They will create them too

Gangwon Digital Healthcare and Sejong Special Self-driving Demonstration Regulation Free Zone have started to activate telemedicine and self-driving, respectively, by reinforcing professional businesses.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced on the 13th that it has additionally designated Gangwon Digital Healthcare and Sejong Special Self-driving Regulation Free Zone as operators through a written review by the 4th Regulatory Free Special Zone Regulation Review Committee, which took place from the 4th to the 8th.

Gangwon Digital Healthcare Special District added seven primary hospitals to demonstrate telemedicine for elderly and chronic patients in mountainous remote areas where access to medical institutions is difficult, and selected two companies specializing in remote management systems and four university industry-academic cooperation groups, including Yonsei University's Wonju Industrial-Academic Cooperation Group, for smooth operation.

Although there have been some concerns about the telemedicine project due to a lack of participation in the primary hospital in charge of telemedicine, the demonstration project will proceed as planned later this month with the addition of seven more this time.

In the case of Sejong's special self-driving regulation zone, Otonomus E-Two, the operator of domestic self-driving vehicles, and Phantom AI Korea will additionally participate. It also plans to add a new Naver system, the operator of self-driving road safety infrastructure and control systems, to use it as an opportunity to innovate self-driving technologies in South Korea.

Park Young-sun, Minister of SMEs and Startups, said, "Based on the strength of our country as we overcame Corona 19, we will make the Special Zone for Regulation Freedom as the foundation of Smart Korea."

Meanwhile, "Phantom AI Korea" is a startup founded in Silicon Valley in 2016 and is drawing attention as it has moved back to Korea.

"The U.S. has no infrastructure support, but South Korea has high-tech transportation infrastructure such as traffic control facilities and BRTs in Sejong City, which greatly helped startups with insufficient funding," said Woo Hoon-je, director of PhantomAI.
